S. Charles Bivens, MTh

Founder, The Being Human Project

August 25, 2027 Wednesday / Speaker 2 – 10:20am to 11:00am

S. Charles Bivens is a practical theologian-ethicist, turned techkie, and founder of The Being Human Project, an initiative dedicated to exploring the most pressing question of our time: What does it mean to be human in the age of artificial intelligence?

With a background that integrates theology, depth psychology, anthropology, and emerging technologies, Charles has spent two decades guiding students, leaders, and organizations toward ethical, human-centered innovation. His work focuses on building frameworks for responsible AI, grounded in human dignity, compassion, and flourishing.

Through the Being Human Project, Charles has developed the Humanity Engine—a reflective, process-oriented framework designed to weave ethics into every stage of AI development and deployment. Rather than treating ethics as a compliance checkbox, the framework centers on AHIMSA (non-harm), human moral agency, and the rediscovery of humanity’s purpose in a technological age.

Charles is known for making complex questions approachable and inspiring, helping audiences see technology not as a threat but as an opportunity to re-integrate what has become fragmented in modern life. His speaking style blends philosophy, storytelling, and practical guidance, leaving listeners challenged and inspired to build technology that truly serves human flourishing.

The Being Human Project – Organizational Bio

The Being Human Project is a multidisciplinary initiative at the intersection of AI, ethics, psychology, and anthropology, dedicated to answering a single question: What does it mean to be human?

The project works with technologists, educators, policymakers, and faith communities to:

Develop ethical frameworks for AI and emerging technologies

Create educational resources to equip leaders and developers

Host dialogues and workshops that bring together voices from across disciplines

Its flagship model, the Humanity Engine, helps teams implement ethics not as an afterthought but as a design principle, ensuring technology is developed in ways that reduce suffering, preserve human agency, and foster flourishing.
